Skin conditions

A few of the conditions patients most often come in for. Do not use this for self-diagnosis — it is a starting point, not a verdict.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting skin areas rich in sebaceous glands (face, scalp, sternum). Although it can look like the dandruff of oily hair, it is far more aggressive and can also affect other areas, such as the eyebrows.

  • Greasy, yellowish scaling
  • Redness around the nose and eyebrows
  • Scalp itching
  • A relapsing course, worsened by stress

Rosacea

Rosacea is characterised by vasodilation, erythema and pustules on the face. Its most visible sign is the network of fine red vessels across the cheeks and nose. More rarely, rosacea can also affect the eyes.

Moles and pigmented naevi

Moles, or pigmented naevi, are skin lesions with a genetic determinism — it is written in our genes that they will appear at some point. There is practically no one without moles; most people have between 1 and 40. Most are benign, but some are not — and only a physician can tell one from the other.
